Sole
Sole are another great tasting table fish that are sought after, Sole is a right eyed fish and differs from other flatfish by being a lot longer than it is wide and not as oval, they are brown sometimes with grey as well on top and can be mottled, it has a white underside and a black spot on the pectoral fins.
A good sized sole will weight around 3lb whereas most will be around the 1lb mark.
The legal take home size is 25cm / 10 inches
Rigs:
2 Hook flapper: 60lb main rig body & 20lb hook length of about 2-3ft with a size 2-6 hook. Aberdeen style.
3 Hook flapper: 60lb main rig body & 20lb hook length of about 2-3ft with size 2-6 hook.
(Either of above rigs can also be boomed from shore to keep it harder on the bottom)
Running ledger: 60lb main rig body & 20lb hook length of about 2-3ft with size 2-6 hook.
Baits:
Lugworm: probably the best bait for sole a whole lug worm threaded onto the hook.
Ragworm: Whole worms threaded onto the hook.
Mackerel: long thin strips threaded onto the hook shank and whipped at the top.
Grounds:
Sole are primarily found on a sandy or muddy seabed you may find a lot of them if you can find a sandy/muddy floor between boulder fields or reef marks.
Sole tend to feed more at night and can be caught close into the shore, they are more prevalent on the rising tide as it scours and releases food as the tide comes in.
